The County Treasurer is an elected position with a four-year term. Paula took office January 2, 2017. Prior to the elected position, she was the Chief Deputy Treasurer for four years and Deputy Treasurer for two years. She has also worked in the County Auditor’s office for 6 years and the County Clerk’s office, Account Payable department for 6 years.
The Department of the County Treasurer’s office is responsible for receiving, disbursing, and investing funds for Jefferson County such as collecting funds from various county offices for fees, taxes, forfeitures, land sales, bonds, evidence monies, licenses, insurance, postage, etc. Funds are also received from local, state, and federal government entities for domestic shelter fees, municipal contributions, state reimbursements, sales tax, lien fees, right of way fees, federal road projects, grant payments, CART, Financial Institution Tax, FEMA disaster reimbursements, etc.
The office distributes weekly accounts payable, bi – weekly payroll for two departments, and monthly payroll for all other departments, as well as monthly distributions of funds to Special Road Districts and Colleges. They are required by law to keep the general ledger balanced with all banking and investment accounts the county keeps with four financial institutions.
The Treasurer’s office completes audit confirmations from banks, auditors, and government entities as well as monthly statements to cities for their road tax allocations.
