The Great American Eclipse in Jefferson County!

August 21, 2017

On August 21, 2017, Jefferson County will be in the path of a total solar eclipse, an event that has not happened in our area since the year 1442.  Be prepared, because it is coming SOON!

Just after 1 pm on Monday, August 21, 2017, with many schools already in session, the Moon will travel between the earth and the sun and cast a shadow upon the Earth.  Darkness will fall in the middle of the day, causing planets and stars to appear.  The temperature could drop 10-15 degrees and any wind or breeze will diminish.  Animals and insects may behave like nightfall has set.  You may think you have seen a "total" solar eclipse before, but chances are you have not.

In Jefferson County, the partial eclipse will begin at 10:49 am and extend until 1:44 pm.  The total eclipse period will be short, but spectacular, and will last from 12:16 to 12:19 pm.  We should have 2 minutes and 40 seconds of totality in our area.

PLEASE, take proper precautions if you plan on viewing this event.  We advise that you NEVER look directly at the sun during this event unless you have SPECIALIZED viewing glasses or goggles designed for eclipse viewing.  MULTIPLE PAIRS OF SUNGLASSES WILL NOT WORK!  As the day for the eclipse draws nearer, galsses and/or goggles specifically designed for eclipse viewing will become available.  PLEASE PURCHASE AND USE THEM!

All parks in our park system will be available for observing and experiencing the eclipse, but our best park for viewing will be the Northwest Jefferson County Sports Complex, 4900 Byrnesville Road, House Springs MO 63051.  The park has large open areas that will be appropriate for this type of event.  All are welcome!

Several websites have good information to help make this once in a lifetime event a learning experience for you and your family.  Those are:

More information will become available here on our department website and our facebook page as this monumental event nears.
