| In 1986 the Jefferson County Commission adopted a Solid Waste Ordinance. The Code Enforcement Department is responsible for enforcing this Ordinance. The Ordinance establishes standards for the storage, transportation and disposal of household trash, furniture, appliances, derelict automobiles, auto parts and other junk and trash. The Department averages more than twenty (20) investigations per day. More than 10,500 violations of the Ordinance have been corrected leaving Jefferson County a cleaner, healthier, more desirable place in which to live.
One result of the Ordinance has been the establishment of a recycling office. The office works with recyclers, municipalities, schools and civic organizations to encourage better waste reduction methods, recycling and the backyard composting of yard waste.
The Code Enforcement Division has the responsibility for enforcing the County Solid Waste Ordinance, coordinating solid waste and recycling activities and processing cases involving Building Codes and the Zoning Order.
