Animal Control Ordinance
Welcome To The Animal Control Division
The Division of Animal Control is Committed to the enhancement of responsible pet caregiving to all cats and dogs.

  • We respond to calls referencing stray animals running at large, animal abuse, neglect and injured cases. We also maintain a "lost & found" canine and feline list when reported by owners.

  • ADOPTIONS OF FELINE AND CANINES:You must be at least 18 years old and apply in person. If you rent, we ask your landlord's permission before releasing the pet. The adoption process involves completing an adopton agreement form and meeting with an adoption counselor who will ask you about your home and your plans to care for your new pet.

  • WHAT CAN YOU ADOPT?We have kittens, adult cats, purebreds and alley cats, as well as puppies, adult dogs, pure and mixed breed, small to large and some already house trained.

  • OWNER RESPONSIBILITIES:When you go for walks, clean up after you pet companion. Collars must not be too tight. (Rule of thumb: leave a two (2) finger space between neck & collar.)Do Not use metal chain slip or prong collars unless training. Remove after training and place a buckle collar on your companion. Remember to check collars daily on puppies as collars do not expand when puppy grows.

    SUMMER SAFETY GUIDELINES:

  • Make sure your pets have access to clean water at all times.
  • Make sure outside pets have access to shade at all times during the day.
  • Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car. Temperature in a parked car can rise to over 100 degrees within minutes.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise with your pet on extremely hot days and refrain from physical activity when the sun's heat is most intense.
  • If your pet is overcome by heat exhaustion, immediately immerse or spary him or her with cool running water and continue until the body temperature lowers, give your pet plenty of water to drink and consult your veternarian to determine if additional treatment is needed.
  • Make sure your pet is tested by a veterinarian for Heartworm Disease (mosquito transmitted) and begin a prevention maintenance medication.
  • To learn more on taking better care of your pet, Contact your local American Red Cross for Pet First Aid Classes.

    POISON PREVENTION:

  • Beware of common household plants that can be poisonous to pets. They include azalea, oleander, castor bean, sago palm, yew and, in the case of cats, Easter Lily.

  • Never allow pets access to cleaning agents, pesticides, automotive products, prescription drugs and over the counter medications.

  • Never give your pets medication unless directed to do so by a veterinarian.

  • Keep pets away from mothballs, potpourri oil, homemade play dough, fabric saftener sheets, diswahing detergent and batteries.

  • Know that certain food items can be dangerous. They include onions, chocolate, alcoholic beverages, yeast dough, coffee, tea, salt, macadamia nuts, tomato leaves and stems, rhubarb, avacado (toxic to birds, mice, rabbits, horses, cattle and dairy goats), cigarettes and moldy or spoiled foods.

  • Never use product meant for dogs on a cat; never use a cat product on a dog.

  • Consult a veterinarian before buying a flea-treatment or preventive product, especially when treating sick, debilitated or pregnant pets.
