Did you know?  The City of DeSoto was established in 1857 as a stop on along the Iron Mountain Railroad and was named after the great explorer Hernando DeSoto.  The DeSoto railroad car-shops employ hundreds of people and is DeSoto's largest industrial employer.  DeSoto is nicknamed the 'Fountain City' because of the many artesian wells that provided the incentive for families to settle in the area.  Governor Jeremiah 'Jay' Nixon is a native of the City of DeSoto.
